Helen L. Saunders

April 19, 1917 to February 08, 2010

Helen Saunders age 92 of Marion and formerly of Hopkinton, died Monday, February 8, 2010 at St. Luke’s Hospital, Cedar Rapids following a sudden illness.

Funeral Services will be held 11:00 Friday morning, February 12, 2010 at the First United Church of Hopkinton with interment in the Hopkinton Cemetery. Surviving are 3 sons, Russell (Jenny), Westminster, Colorado, Tom (Nellie) of Cedar Rapids, and Robert (Connie) of Rochester, Minnesota, 8 Grandchildren, Jon, Kate, Jennifer, Jason, Andy and Abbie, Dave, Misty , 6 great-Grandchildren, Blake, Kaycee, Isabel, Jakob, and Jaciana, Mitch, and a brother, John (Blanche) Newlin, Austin, Minn. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Russell. 2 Sisters, Elizabeth Hart and Dorothy Miller.

Helen L. Newlin was born April 19, 1917 at Viola, Iowa. She was the daughter of Harry and Edna Griffith, Newlin. She received her education in the Viola Schools graduating with the class of 1934. She went on the attend beauty school in Cedar Rapids. She first started working as a beautician in Mount Vernon before moving to Hopkinton. Helen Newlin and Russell Saunders were married July 20, 1945 at the Viola Methodist Church. The couple made their home in Hopkinton. Helen worked as a beautician in Hopkinton until she retired in 1968. Helen and Russell moved to Village Place in Marion in 2004. He preceded her in death on December 7, 2009. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, U.M.W., and the Miriam Circle.
