Ruth A. Hargrave age 98, of Monticello, died Tuesday, March 02, 2010 at the Monticello Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 Friday morning, March 5, 2010 at the United Church of Monticello. Rev. Edwin Moreano will officiate at the services. Interment will be in the Memory Gardens Cemetery, Iowa City at 2:00 PM. Friends may call from 4 until 6 Thurday at Goettsch Funeral Monticello. Surviving is her daughter, Jennifer (Michael) O’Dorney and grandson Evan of Danville, California, 2 step-children, James (Juanita) Hargrave, Monticello and Linda Abele, Olin, 4 step-Grandchildren, 4 step-great-grandchildren, 12 nieces and 5 nephews.
Ruth Agnes Papke was born November 19, 1911 at Sabula, Iowa. She was the daughter of Paul Emil and Louisa Hatheway, Papke. Ruth graduated from the Sabula High School in 1928. She then attended Iowa State Teachers College graduating in 1930. She taught in Lamoille, Rockwell City, Fort Dodge, Davenport, Iowa City, Iowa and later in Sea Side and Waterford, Connecticut. Ruth continued her education at the University of Iowa and Connecticut College for Women. Ruth also worked at the Iowa Sailors and Soldiers Orphans Home near Davenport.
Ruth Agnes Papke and Elmer T. Melberg were married June 17, 1939 at the Little Brown Church, Nashua, Iowa. The couple made their home in Iowa City. Their daughter Jennifer was born on July 8, 1955. He preceded in death on June 17, 1963.
Ruth Agnes Papke Melberg and Herbert Hyatt were married August 7, 1965. The couple resided in Santa Ana California. Herbert preceded her in death on April 8, 1968. Ruth continued to live in Santa Ana until July 11, 1983 when she married Glenn Hargrave on July 11, 1983 at St. Luke’s Methodist Church, Monticello, Iowa. Glenn preceded her in death on July 10, 1991. Ruth had been a resident of the Monticello Nursing and Rehabilitation Center the past 13 years.
Ruth had been a member of the Lamoille Women’s Club, the Ebell Club in Santa Ana, and a charter member of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Iowa City. She was currently a member of the United Church of Monticello and the Martha Circle.
