Robert Gates age 88, of Hopkinton, died Saturday morning, May 1, 2010 at the Monticello Nursing and Rehabilitation Center following an extended illness.
Funeral Services will be held 11:00 Tuesday morning, May 4, 2010 at the First United Church of Hopkinton with interment in the Hopkinton Cemetery. Cheryl Gates and Rev. Kim Gates will officiate at the services. Friends may call from 4 until 8 Monday at the Goettsch Funeral Home, Hopkinton. Thoughts, Memories and Condolences may be left at www.goettschonline.com. Surviving are 2 daughters, Margaret (Larry) Sheppard, Manchester and Amy Jo Gates, Monticello; 5 Grandchildren, and 6 great-Grandchildren; a brother Kimbal (Shirley) Gates Hopkinton. He was preceded in death by his parents his wife Gayle in 2007 and a son, Daniel J. Gates in 1990.
Robert Leslie Gates was born April 18, 1922 at Washington, Iowa. He was the son of W. Leslie and Edith Marie Nebergall, Gates. He received his education in the Washington, Iowa Schools where he graduated in 1941. He continued his education in Oregon attending a diesel mechanics school. Bob went on to serve in the United States Army Air Corp during WWII. Robert Gates and Nellie Gayle Davis were married June 18, 1944 at Washington, Iowa. The couple farmed for several years near Washington. They later lived at Kalona, Iowa where they operated Gates Implement a John Deere and Chevrolet Dealership, with his father and brother Kimbal. In 1958 the couple moved to a farm near Hopkinton. They retired from active farming in 1989.
