Obituary

Betty L Boyles, 90, of Hopkinton, passed away Monday, March 31, 2025, at Pinicon Senior Living in Anamosa, IA.

Betty was born July 12, 1934. She is the daughter of Howard and Mary Cole Kurth. Betty is part of a large family of 12. She graduated from Anamosa High School. She worked for the Jones County Treasurer office beginning her senior year of high school as an intern, and then for a few years after.
In 1955 she married William Boyles. They had 6 children. In 1966, they purchased a farm near Hopkinton, IA where they lived until 2019. Betty was active in every aspect of her family life. She was an excellent cook and baker. You never visited her house without being offered a meal. She was an amazing seamstress. She made clothes, formal dresses, doll clothes, curtains, quilts, and blankets. She adored doing anything for her grandchildren. She also enjoyed traveling south with Bill each winter to spend time with her children and in Florida, Georgia, and Texas.

Betty was also a very charitable person. She was involved with the Hopkinton Community Church. She was active in starting the original Tiny House. She helped serve and prepare many funeral lunches. She found time to bring her elderly friends to appointments.


Betty is survived by her children, Karen (Bill) Bennett of El Paso, TX; David (Janet) Boyles, Hopkinton, IA; Rick Boyles, Cedar Rapids, IA; Karla (David) Thilges, Fairfax, IA; her son-in-law, Julian Torres, Westminster, MD; her Grandchildren (Lindsay) Smock, Sanford, FL; Justin (Heather) Smock, NM; Lindsey Boyles, Cedar Rapids, IA; Ryan (Kelsey) Boyles, Clarksville, IA; David A. Boyles, Hopkinton, IA; John Torres, Westminster, MD; Cassie Kersey, Westminster, MD;   Bryce Thilges, Fairfax, IA; 11 Great-grandchildren.  Also, her siblings, Paul (Linda) Kurth, Kenneth (Glenda) Kurth, Jim (Laurel) Kurth, Michael (Dawn) Kurth, Ernest Kurth, Kathryn Hankemeier. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bill; her son, Dennis Boyles; her daughter, Debbie Sue Torres; grandson, Phillip Smock; great-grandson, William Scott Kersey; sister, Carolyn Krob, brothers: Howard, Bob, Albert, and Carl Kurth.

Visitation will be held 10 to Noon Saturday Morning, April 5, 2025 at the Hopkinton Community Church. Funeral Service will be at Noon following Visitation.

Interment will be in the Wilcox Cemetery at a later date.  Goettsch Funeral Home, Monticello has taken Betty and her family into their care.
