Cecilia Hatcher joined her beloved husband and best friend, Jon, in heaven on October 23, 2026, succumbing to her struggle with dementia after a healthy and fulfilling life.
Cecilia McLaughlin Hatcher was born in 1939 to Glen and Dorothy McLaughlin. She was a lifelong Anamosa resident. She graduated Anamosa High School as class valedictorian in 1957 and graduated from Clark College in Dubuque Summa Cum Laude 1960. Four weeks after graduation she married the love of her life Jon Hatcher. Cecilia and Jon had four children Sharon (Greg) Kaczmarek, Tom (Tina) Hatcher, Dave (Lesley Jernigan) Hatcher and Mary (Dave) Martensen. She was a grandmother to seven.
Cecilia and Jon shared a life of service to their community and church. They were both instrumental in the Grant Wood Gallery and the Grant Wood Art Festival during its entire duration. Cecilia was a Camp Fire leader, member of Anamosa Hospital Auxiliary Board, Pumpkinfest committee, Cornelian Club officer, Summer Reading Program volunteer at the Anamosa Public Library. She was instrumental in raising funds for Jones Regional Hospital, a member of many St Patrick's Church Committees and Fall Festival. She was a Chamber of Commerce Ambassador and an early member of the Anamosa Community Foundation (Cultivate Anamosa). There are more committees and projects that Cecilia donated time, money, and effort to, but our parents truly believed you served to help others and not for personal recognition.
Cecilia was a substitute teacher for the Anamosa School District for years and also taught adult education cooking classes both which she thoroughly enjoyed. Her love of antiques led her to create Antiques of Anamosa that she happily ran for over 30 years. She enjoyed the thrill of the hunt and all the people she was able to interact with during her antiquing adventures.
Cecilia helped husband Jon with two cancer battles. This first was in 1994, and again in 1996. Dad's second round required a bone marrow transplant. During this time, Mom spent over 90 consecutive days with him to aid in his recovery at the University of Iowa Hospital. On their 36th wedding anniversary they finally got the news that the transplant was working! They were very fortunate to spend another 20 years together until Dad passed away in 2016.
Cecilia loved to travel whether it was day trips with friends or overseas excursions. Besides her trips with Jon, she was most excited about her 80th birthday trip to Egypt. She also shared their love of travel with her grandchildren with Grandma/Grandchildren trips to New York City, Alaska, and the Caribbean.
Cecilia is survived by her children and grandchildren Julie (Nygel Crawford), Andrew, Anthony, Michael (Leah Bohnsack), Lauren (Peyton Shannon), Donelle and Sawyer. She is also survived by her sister Catherine (Larry) Rogge as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews, and wonderful friends. She is preceded in death by her husband, Jon, parents Glen and Dorothy, many sisters- in-law and brothers-in-law as well as some great friends. Her children would like to express thanks to family and friends, and the caring staff at Pinicon Senior Living, Woodland Park, and Above and Beyond Hospice.
The family will greet friends from 4 to 7 pm Sunday, November 8, 2026, at the Goettsch Funeral Home, Anamosa. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 am Monday, November 9, 2026, at St. Patrick Catholic Church. Rev. Steve Garner will officiate. A funeral lunch will be held immediately after in the church hall. Following the lunch burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery. Please use the Guestbook to share your thoughts, memories, and condolences with Cecilias family.
