David Lynn
Paine
Dec 28, 1937 — Jul 7, 2022
David Lynn Paine, family man and original thinker, "slipped the surly bonds of Earth" on July 7, 2022. He was surrounded by Barb, his wife of 63 years, and their beloved dog, Beau, as his heart beat its last, signaling the end of a charmed and self-determined life of 84 years.
Second son of Dave and Vera (Miller) Paine—and known as Lynn to his family—he was a South Dakota farm boy who loved nothing more than to sing at the top of his lungs atop a tractor or attend colorful and dynamic small-town functions in Bryant, South Dakota.
At South Dakota State in Brookings, Dave met Barbara Ann May. They married in June 1959 and travelled the country as Dave continued his studies and engineered various jobs as an inventor and designer. He then founded a successful company, the prototype product of which was created in the basement of the family home near Owatonna, Minnesota. With several patents under his belt and always an adventurer, Dave and Barb, both in their 70's, designed and built a home near Anamosa, Iowa. Dave loved to design and tinker whether it was building an authentic windmill, an elevator for his church, or a water course and goldfish pond in the front yard. He was always willing to lend a hand when needed.
The Black Hills remained a special place to Dave all his life, and it was in the family cabin that "Grandpa Lynn" honed his storytelling skills. A painter, a singer, a reader—Dave was a true Renaissance Man. His sense of humor and love of family were traits that are irreplaceable, and he will be fondly remembered. The likes of Dave, Lynn, Uncle Lynn, and Grandpa Lynn will be recalled over and over—long into the future.
Dave is survived by his wife, Barb Paine; his children, Steph Paine-Saunders (Scott Saunders), René
Paine, Dan Paine and Jen Düster (Keith Düster); his grandchildren Tyler Paine (Corinne), Quinci Paine, McKinley Paine, Devinn Paine, Julia (Saunders), Will (Saunders), Simon (Düster), Faye (Düster), Ella (Düster), Mara (Düster), and Meg (Düster); and his brother, Myron Paine.
