Donald Beranek, 89, passed away peacefully Wednesday July 22, 2026, at the Monticello Nursing and Rehabilitation Center with his family at his side.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 Wednesday morning, July 29, 2026, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Prairieburg, with interment in the St. Joseph Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 until 7 on Tuesday at the Goettsch Funeral Home, Monticello. Fr. Steven Garner will officiate at the services.

Donald Anthony Beranek was born April 30, 1937, near Prairieburg, Iowa, the son of Anthony (AJ) and Ida Himes Beranek. He attended grade school at St. Joseph Catholic School and graduated Coggon High School with the class of 1955. On June 3rd 1983, he was united in marriage to Kay Drexler in Manchester, IA. Don worked construction his whole career ranging from building houses to remodeling in the Linn County area. He was employed by VanNote construction for many years, retiring in 2001.

Don is survived by his wife, Kay; his children, John (Paige), William (Amie), Mike, Lisa Pruss, Vickie, Mary Williams, and stepson, Rick Matthews; his sister, Barb Heller; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sons, Tony and Ken; a granddaughter, Aurora Elizabeth; and sister & in-laws, Lorraine (Nelson) LeClere and Chuck Heller.

Donald was a true craftsman and was known for his workmanship. He was active in the community of Prairieburg, serving as the mayor, serving on the City Council, Fire Department and at one time was the Town Marshall.In retirement he continued working on small construction projects and helping at the St. Joseph Cemetery with his wife Kay. He enjoyed sitting in his chair watching the animals outside, visiting with friends & neighbors and seeing his grandchildren.The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Above & Beyond and Monticello Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
