Ray Fortune, 83, of Anamosa, passed away Tuesday, July 27, 2021 peacefully at his home.
Rev. Nick March will celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 am Thursday, August 5, 2021 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Anamosa, IA. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 4 to 7 pm, Wednesday, August 4, 2021 at the Goettsch Funeral Home, Anamosa, IA. The family requests that you honor Ray by wearing your favorite Hawkeye apparel. Donald Ray Fortune was born July 31, 1937 in Ridgefarm, Illinois, the son of William and Elsie (Knight) Fortune. He attended school in Elkhart, IA and graduated with the Class of 1957. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Upper Iowa University in 1992. He married Bonny Rose Schroeder at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Carroll, IA on January 17, 1959. She passed in 2016. Ray was employed by Northwestern Bell, managing the Anamosa office, then advancing in the company from there, and retiring in 1993. He continued to work, self-employed, until he fully retired in 2016.
He enjoyed golfing, fishing, and watching the Iowa Hawkeyes, as well he cheered for the Green Bay Packers and the New York Yankees. He was an excellent pitcher, particularly in fast pitch softball. He played guitar and entertained family and friends throughout his life. He coached Little League baseball and was an assistant scout master in the Boy Scouts. He and Bonny were very involved in the Anamosa civic community and with St Patrick's Catholic Church. They loved to spend time at the family lake cabin in Nevis, MN and winter is Scottsdale, AZ. Above all else, Ray loved his family dearly and enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren.
He is survived by his sons Craig (Debra), Williams Bay, WI, Jeff (Kristi), Anamosa and Ben (Lauren), Iowa City, his grandchildren Tom, Josie, Zak, Ashlyn, Conor, and Eleanor, sister Janet Albaugh, and sister-in-law Jan Schroeder.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, sister Doris Ann McQueen, her husband Norman McQueen, and his sister Janet's Husband, Donald Albaugh.
In lieu of flowers and gifts, memorials are preferred.
