Obituary

Don Harmon 87, died peacefully, Saturday morning, March 9, 2024, at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 on Friday morning, March 15, 2024, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Anamosa.  Pastor Rodney Bluml will officiate at the services. Visitation will be held from 4 until 8 Thursday evening at the Goettsch Funeral Home, Anamosa.  Thoughts, memories, and condolences may be left at www. Goettschonline.com.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or St. Paul Lutheran Church

Surviving is his wife, Dorothy, his children, Brian (Peg), Carolyn (Jim) Kapoun, Mark (Rhonda), Denise (D.J.) Young a former son-in-law Mark Whitmore and 6 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild, and 1 on the way.   He was preceded by his 4 sisters, Eva May, Florence, Mary Ann, and Sandra.

Donald Allen Harmon was born March 16, 1936, in Thornton, Iowa, the son of Floyd and Luella Neve, Harmon. Don graduated from Sheffield High School and Luther College.  He would later receive his master's degree from UNI.   Don and Dorothy Cuvelier were married on August 10, 1958, in Bristow, Iowa.  Don started his career in education teaching at Guttenberg and Aplington before moving to Anamosa in 1967.  He taught senior math, later becoming the junior high guidance counselor, and assistant Girls Basketball Coach, before retiring in 1996. Don also taught math at the Iowa Men's Reformatory for several years.

Don served on the Anamosa City Council for several years.  As a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, he taught Sunday School, was a lay minister, and served on the council.   Don was an avid gardener most of his life. He enjoyed walks through Wapsi Park and combined with his love of photography, he documented the park as it changed over the years.

The family would like to thank Above and Beyond Hospice, Mark, Rhonda, and Courtney for all the love, care, and support given to Don and Dorthy making it possible to keep Don at home throughout his illness
