Obituary

Doris Jeanne (Orr) Herren, 94, of Anamosa, Iowa, died February 12, 2024, at Jones County Regional Medical Center in Anamosa, Iowa.

Doris Jeanne Orr was born January 16, 1930, in a farmhouse north of Onslow, Iowa.  She was the sixth child born to Alva and Averill Orr, joining older siblings Dean, Dorothy, Aurilla, Jack, and Carol.  The family later added brothers Harbison and Alvin.  She attended country grade school through 8th grade, then graduated from Anamosa High School in 1947.  She went to work at the law offices of Rees, Remley, and Heiserman.  After that she was employed as a bookkeeper at the Anamosa Livestock Auction.  Doris Jeanne then worked as the Deputy Recorder at the Jones County Recorder's Office.  In 1970, she was elected to serve as the Jones County Recorder, and she held that position until her retirement in January of 1993.

Doris Jeanne Orr and Duane Herren were married on September 11, 1950, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa.  The couple farmed until 1966, then moved to a residence in Anamosa.  To that union, four children were added, Debra Jeanne, Dawn Elaine, Daniel Edward, and Darcy Jane.  The family grew to include six grandchildren, Kirsten Markwell, Brian Weeks, Daniel Wegman, Jonathan Wegman, Erica Jacobs, and Brett Jacobs.  Eleven great grandchildren followed – Genevieve and Jack Markwell, Freja Hansell-Weeks, Annie, Mollie, and Joey Wegman, Kennedy, Kasen, and Alli Barnhart, and Bennett, Leighton, and Baylor Jacobs.

Doris Jeanne was preceded in death by her parents, Alva and Averill, her husband, Duane, all her sisters and brothers, and her daughter, Debra.

Doris Jeanne and Duane loved to dance.  They frequently attended local ballrooms, but it wasn't uncommon for them to drive many miles to dance to the music of the big bands.  They also enjoyed playing cards with friends and family, especially bridge and 500.  "Pee Wee" to many, Doris Jeanne lived a life that was anything but small.  She leaves an endearing legacy of love and compassion for family and friends—as well as a great sense of humor.  Doris Jeanne will be dearly missed.
