Obituary

Douglas D. Scoville, 64, died Tuesday, September 22, 2026, at his home in Monticello, Iowa.

A gathering of family and friends will be held Saturday, October 17, 2026, at Dennis and Deb Chapman's home, 18457 Hwy 38 in Monticello, Iowa, starting at 4:00 p.m. with Military Honors.

Doug was born August 1, 1962, in Hillsdale, Michigan, the son of Lyle Dean and Maxine Carol Hurst Scoville. He was a graduate of Hillsdale High School and Ferris State University. He received his Master's Degree in Science from Troy State University.

Doug first served in the United States Marine Corps for ten years where he was a CH-46 helicopter pilot, a forward air controller, and a flight instructor. He was honorably discharged from the Marine Corps in 1995 as a captain.

In 1997, Doug enlisted in the United States Air Force and became a C-130 airlift pilot. He served during Operations Joint Forge, Enduring Freedom, and Iraqi Freedom. He was honorably discharged from the Air Force in 2009 as a lieutenant colonel.

After his service, Doug took a job with Pipeline Petroleum flying pipeline routes looking for maintenance problems, which landed him in Monticello. The Jitney was his favorite place to go and he quickly found his second family there and the nickname "Airplane Doug." He enjoyed Sundays at the Chapman home, MMC rides to Schakeys with the Jitney Crew, listening to Crosscut and Foley & Farrowe, and fishing and hunting with the Chapman, Foley, and Naab families.

Doug retired in 2024. He continued to live in Monticello but frequently traveled to Michigan and Minnesota to hunt and fish with family and friends. Doug enjoyed canning, smoking meat, and making sausage with his cousin Jeff's family. Doug was the ultimate fly fisherman. You could always find him where the fish were biting.

Doug will forever be remembered for his kind heart, big laugh, and gentle nature.

Doug is survived by two daughters, Casey (Mike) Hinton and Caitlyn Scoville; his mother, Maxine Scoville; his brother, Steve (Amy) Scoville; his nephew, Tucker (Montana) Scoville; his niece, Riley (Tim) Case; and numerous other family members and friends.

Goettsch Funeral Home, Monticello, has taken Doug and his family into their care. The family would like to thank the Chapman and Naab families for their hospitality during this difficult time.
