Galen Etten age 82, died Friday, November 6, 2020 at his home in following a extended illness.
Funeral services will be held at a later date at the Peace United Church of Christ in Monticello. Goettsch Funeral Home has taken Galen and his family into their care.
Surviving is his wife Mary, 3 children, Carla (Bryce) Van Gorp, Reasoner, Rodney Etten, Onslow, Brian Etten, Anamosa, and son-in-law, Glen Null, Monticello, 8 grandchildren, Cassie, Christina and Jacob Null, Heather Heister, Gregory, Warren, Paige, and Jamie Etten, 4 great-grandchildren and one on the way, a step-granddaughter Kayla VanGorp and 2 sisters, Evelyn Stimpson, Anamosa, Marlene Like, Monticello. He was preceded in death by his parents and 2 brothers, Marvin and LaVern.
Galen Dean Etten was born June 14, 1938 at Monticello, Iowa. He was the son of Fredrick and Louise Paulsen, Etten. He graduated from the Anamosa High school with the class of 1956. He worked as a farm hand for John Campbell in Castle Grove Township. Galen served in the United States Army Reserve for 9 years. He married Mary Carl on July 2, 1960 in Lawton, Oklahoma. The couple farmed the Ruel McComb farm in Castle Grove Township and later the Forbes Olberg farm near Amber. In 1977 they bought a home near Maquoketa where he was farming at the time. He retired from farming and moved back to Anamosa where he went to work at DMR Van Conversion in Monticello. He later started a contracting business with his son Rodney until he retired in 2014.
In retirement he enjoyed wood working, helping his son Brian on the farm and helping Carla and Bryce pick ear corn. He loved going to all of his grandchildren's sporting events, especially their motocross racing. He was an avid reader of the Monticello Express every week.
