George Helle, 90, died Tuesday at St. Lukes Hospital Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday at 10:30 A.M., July 11, 2026, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Anamosa with interment in the Holy Cross Cemetery. Fr. Sean Smith will officiate at the services. Visitation will be held from 3 until 7 Friday at the Goettsch Funeral Home, Anamosa. Thoughts, Memories and Condolences may be left at Goettschonline.com.
George Leander Helle was born February 16th, 1936, in Dyersville, Iowa, to Sedella (Kramer) and George Bernard Helle. George was born the third oldest of fourteen children and worked many jobs in his youth. While at a Worthington dance, he met the love of his life, Constance (Soppe) Helle, which he often described as “perfect.” George and Connie were married on January 25, 1964, and had twelve children over the course of their marriage. They were married for 62 years. George often laughed about how they were gifted twelve pillowcases at their wedding ceremony.
George is remembered for his dedication to hard work, which he passed on to his family, his love for his family, and his love of God. He is remembered by his devoted wife Connie, his children Audrey (Barry) Rutan, Becky (Laine) Goldsmith, Sonya (Mike) Maloney, Jennifer (John) Hinz, Daryl Helle, Marcia (Dan) Scofield, Tammy (Dennis) Michael, Karl (Sarah) Helle, Jessi (Bruce Miell) Helle, and Colleen (Kyle) Weber, and grandchildren Alisha and Nichole Rutan, Riley (Ben Yanda), Taylor Hinz, Sebastian and Lexie Goldsmith, Kelsey Scofield, Olivia and Tenley Michael, Brody Maloney, Ashtyn and Ryker Weber, Jadalyn Miell, Briggs Helle and great grandchildren Gracie and Brantley Handand Briley Taylor ,his brothers and sisters Pearl Kelchen, Margie Helle, Paul (Stella) Helle, Frank (Joann) Helle, Marlene (Ambrose) Koopmann, Ruth Griffin, Bob (Cami) Helle, Luann (Bob) Cigrand, Tom Tauke, Doris (Clair) Riesberg, and his in-laws Leo and Donna Soppe, Dave Holz, Diane Nerney, Carol Oberbroeckling, Debbie Steger, and Doris Soppe and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his mother and father, his stepmother Joan (Jeager) Helle, Father and mother in law, Reynold and Alberta Soppe, his daughters Wanda(David) Eilers and Gwen Helle, his brother Henry and Leroy, his sisters Kathleen, Sister Mary Ann, Janet and John Swendinger, Norma and Jerry Kelchen, and Joan Tauke, Harry Kelchen and Larry Griffin. In-laws Louis and Jeri Soppe, Loras and Erma Soppe, Andy Soppe, Bev Holz, Bill Oberbroeckling, Al Nerney, John Steger.
The family would like to thank the Anamosa first responders, St. Luke’s ER, ICU and Comfort Care and all staff that cared for him.
