He served honorably until 1963, achieving the rank of Petty Officer. He received extensive electronics training during his service, which shaped his lifelong career. Gerald served aboard the USS Ajax, crossing the Pacific and spending three and a half years stationed in Japan. He was awarded a Good Conduct Medal and a Letter of Commendation for his service.

Following his military service, Gerald worked as an electrical engineer at Rockwell Collins for over 40 years. His career included contributions to many significant projects, including the Apollo lunar landings and the Space Shuttle program.

On October 5, 1963, Gerald married Shirley Mae Bodenhofer in Onslow, Iowa. She preceded him in death in 2002. He later married Rosemary Catherine Owens on August 26, 1995, in Burlington, Iowa. She also preceded him in death, in 2022.
