Obituary

James Eby, of Monticello, died Thursday, September 25, 2025, at St. Lukes Hospital in Cedar Rapids from complications following a heart attack.

James is survived by his wife Ann, and three children: Adam of Mechanicsville, Jason of Monticello, and Amanda (Vern) Thompson of Anamosa; four grandchildren: Thomas Galloway of Dubuque, Cara Galloway of Ottumwa, Lily and Own Thompson of Anamosa; three great-grandchildren: Peyton Galloway of Solon, Kennedy Humbert of Ottumwa, and Aubrey Galloway of Dubuque; sister-in-law Linday Eby of Wyoming, and brother-in-law Elemer (Sheryl) Nissen of Center Junction; and a number of nieces and nephews.

James was preceded in death by his parents, brother Robert Eby, nephews: Robert Eby, Jr., and Paul, Stephen, and Kenny Ames.

James was born at John McDonald Hospital, Monticello, on September 26, 1943, to Charles and Lois Streeper Eby. He married Ann Nissen on December 18, 1966, at Zion American Lutheran Church in Wyoming, Iowa. In early 1967 James began to work for the United States Postal Service, retiring in 1995 after 30 years of government service.

James enjoyed working on cars, trucks, tractors, and motorcycles (prior to computer systems), running a sawmill, creating furniture from native lumber that he produced, scouting adventures with Pack 66, traveling and camping on many family trips in the 49 contiguous states, plus the Canadian provinces and a bit of Mexico. He also loved to play cards and talk with people! So many stories to share! He kept his camera in-hand to get many pictures of the grandchildren and great-grandchildren and he marveled at how they rapidly grew.

A Funeral service and Luncheon will be held for Jim, 11:00 Saturday September 26, 2026, at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Monticello with a luncheon in the church fellowship hall following the service.
