Helen Janet Riffey was born July 27, 1929, in Iowa City, Iowa. She was the daughter of John and Alice Fetherkile, Riffey. She grew up in Missouri and Arkansas where she and her family were migrant farm workers. After graduating high school, Janet took a bus to Iowa where she worked for the County Attorney in the morning and did bookkeeping for a dairy farm in the afternoon.
In 1950 she started her successful farming career near Anamosa while raising her sons. She remained there for 70-plus years. She was an astute businesswoman who had a great deal of compassion. During the early years, she maintained the office, managed the bull rental, and cooked three meals daily for her hired men.
Janet always had time for social events. She played bridge and cribbage, bingo, and bowling. She played bridge, with friends, just two weeks before her death.
The family would like to acknowledge a special niece, Gail Dyslin. Thanks to Dakota and James Terry, and our heartfelt appreciation for Karsyn and the staff at DaVita on Council Street.
