Loras Lyons died Friday, August 30, 2024, at St. Lukes Hospital, Cedar Rapids surrounded by his wife and loving children.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11:00 Thursday morning, September 5, 2024, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Anamosa with interment in the Holy Cross Cemetery with Military Honors. Fr. Sean Smith will officiate at the services. Friends may call from 4 until 7 Wednesday September 4, 2024, at the Goettsch Funeral Home, Anamosa where a Knights of Columbus Rosary will be held at 7:00. Surviving is his wife, Linda, 4 children Angela Lyons, Amy (Al) Stecher, Loras Patrick Lyons, Abby (Joel) Kerr, 2 grandsons, Jack and Jase Stecher, his siblings, Eleanor (Harvey) Denlinger, Carol Stachura, Rosemary Wiley, Jean (Joe) Lynch, Patrick Lyons and Kenneth (Mary) Lyons. He was preceded in death by his parents, and siblings, James, Richard, Michael, Joseph and Mary Janaan (Rosa) Crispo.
Loras Edward Lyons was born May 18, 1942, in Dubuque, Iowa, the son of Lester and Mary Kenny Lyons. He graduated from St. Martins Catholic High School, Cascade with the class of 1960. He then served his country in the United States Army in Vietnam. After his discharge Loras continued his education at US Trade School in Missouri, Kirkwood College, Cedar Rapids, and NICC, Peosta.
On November 15, 1971, Loras married Linda Marek at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Anamosa. The couple farmed near Cascade until moving to Anamosa in retirement. Loras also worked for Cargill, McAndrews Trucking and Pre-Cast Manufacturing. He was later employed by Jones County as an assessor.
Loras had served on the Western Dubuque School Board, was a member of the Jones County Farm Bureau, the Knights of Columbus, the American Legion and St. Patrick Catholic Church.
Loras loved history and historical documentaries, watching westerns, and spending time with family. He never missed attending any of his children's and grandchildren's plays, performances, sporting events, and art shows. Loras was a quiet man with a big heart.
The family would like to thank the entire staffs of Unity Point St. Luke's ICU and Unity Point St. Luke's Hospice for the excellent care they provided to Loras.
