Mary Etten age 80, died Saturday morning, March 20, 2021 at her home following a brief illness.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 Wednesday, March 24, 2021 at the Peace United Church of Christ in Monticello with interment in the Amber Cemetery. Surviving are her 3 children, Carla (Bryce) Van Gorp, Reasoner, Rodney Etten, Onslow, Brian Etten, Anamosa, and son-in-law, Glen Null, Monticello, 8 grandchildren, Cassie, Christina and Jacob Null, Heather Heister, Gregory, Warren, Paige, and Jamie Etten, 10 great-grandchildren and one great-granson on the way, a step-granddaughter Kayla VanGorp and siblings, Roberta Burtling, Darla Watson, Marcia Fiser, Denise Petrick and Diane Korte and a sister-in-law, Julie Vacek.  She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Galen on November 6, 2020, and a brother Greg Carl.

Mary Alice Carl was born December 3, 1940 at Iowa City, Iowa.  She was the daughter of Melvin and Alice Shover, Carl.  She graduated from the Springville High School in 1959.  Mary worked at Collins Radio in Cedar Rapids for several years.   Mary Carl and Galen Etten were married on July 2, 1960 in Lawton, Oklahoma.  The couple farmed the Ruel McComb farm in Castle Grove Township and later the Forbes Olberg farm near Amber.  In 1977 they bought a farm near Maquoketa.   They retired from farming 1981 due to the farm crisis and moved Amber.  Mary worked as a home health aid in the area.   She also raised flowers that she sold at the Anamosa Farmers Market and had a "You Pick Garden" at her home.

Mary was a member of the Peace United Church of Christ in Monticello.  She had been the Youth Director at the church and taught Sunday school.   She also belonged to the Paint and Pallet Club in Anamosa. Mary also volunteered at the Anamosa Care Center where she helped residents make quilts.
