Obituary

Merlyn "Brownie" Brown Sr. age 90, died Wednesday, August 24, 2022 at St. Luke's Transitional Care Center, Cedar Rapids following a brief illness.

Private family services will be held at the Goettsch Funeral Home.  A public graveside service will be held 11:30 Wednesday morning, August 31, 2022 at Oakwood Cemetery, Monticello, with Military Honors.

Surviving are 2 children, Merlyn  Jr. (Pam), Cheryl (Mike) Howie, 3 grandchildren, Chip(Kathy), Cara, Luke (Stacey Rich), great-grandchildren, Kallie, Morgan, Demetrik, Connor, step-grandchildren, Mike Graham (Margaret Desharnais) and Angie Graham, step-grandchildren, Lorenna, Ainsley, Ashtyn and Braxton his siblings, Maxine Kiene and Raymond (Norma) Brown.

He was preceded in death by his parents his wife Joan in 2000 and a brother, Merle.

Merlyn E. Brown was born October 4, 1931 in Franklin County, Nebraska.  He was the son of Raymond and Jenny Newbold, Brown.  Merlyn graduated from the Naponee, NE. high school in 1950.   He worked on the Harlan County Dam before serving in the United States Army during the Korean War. He married Genevieve "Joan" Taylor on December 20, 1951 in Franklin, NE. After his military service Merlyn attended mechanical trade school first working in Holdridge, NE.

The couple moved to Monticello in 1956 where he worked for Miller Implement and later Weers Implement before starting his own repair business Brown and Son in 1970.

He retired from the business in 1994. Brownie enjoyed hunting fishing and trapping. He just loved being in the outdoors.
