Hoot was born on February 26, 1938, in Monticello, IA, the son of Henry "Mike" and Ruth (Gundlach) Chisman. His early education was through the Monticello Community Schools, followed by high school in California.  He was a graduate of the class of 1956 at Pacific Grove High School in Pacific Grove, California. On February 1, 1961 he married Karole K. TerVeen at Carmel by the Sea, Carmel, California.

While in California, Paul drove a bread truck route up and down the California coast where he was a member of the Teamsters Union.  He and his family moved back to Monticello, Iowa, in 1974 where he worked for several concrete companies including Bard Concrete, Flynn Ready Mix in Dubuque, and Century Concrete in Monticello where he was Manager.  Upon retirement, he continued to work driving truck for a variety of other local companies.

Hoot's legacy is his family and the love for the outdoors.  He was an avid fisherman, hunter and could play an outstanding game of golf.  He took pride in sharing these passions with many, many friends over the years, along with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren where he passed down his tips, talents, and expertise.  Beyond being a great man, he was a storyteller at heart.  He shared his stories in detail over the years with all who would listen.  He lived a life filled with amazing hunting and fishing trips all across the United States.  He was a founding member and Chairmen of the Ducks Unlimited Jones County Chapter in 1980.

He is survived by daughters, Brenda Wennekamp (Ken), Shelly Aitchison (John), Kristy Black (Doug); grandchildren Mike Wennekamp (Kelsie), Danny Wennekamp (Nicolette), Matt Wennekamp (Nikki), Morgan Garman (Zach), Taylor Lee (Nathan), Jordan Eastburn (Nicholas), Jaelyn Aitchison, Jacob Black and Bo Black.  Great-grandchildren, Dylan Wennekamp, Brycen and Jerren Wennekamp, Elijah and Mayah Garman, Jaxon Lee, and Hazel Eastburn.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Karole of fifty-five years, his parents, his brother, Robert Chisman, and in-laws, Marvin and Helen TerVeen.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.

For Hoot, family was more than blood.  His family also included the Paulsens of Scotch Grove, the Ricklefs Family of Monticello and a longtime friend, Danny Moore of Carmel Valley, California.
