Obituary

Phyllis Head age 90, died Thursday, August 30, 2018 at St. Luke's Hospital, Cedar Rapids following a brief illness.


Memorial services will be held 11:00 Saturday morning, September 15, 2018 at the United Church of Monticello where the family will greet friends at 10:00.  Rev Ed Moreano and Rev Julia Poulsen will officiate at the services.   Goettsch Funeral Home, Monticello has been entrusted with Phyllis' care and services.  Memorials may be made to the United Church of Monticello or Simpson College.


Surviving are, 3 children, Cathi (Charles) Bencken, Monticello and their children, Nathan (Kitty) Sesma, Chris (Averi) Bencken, Megan (Albert Gonzalez) Sesma,  David (Jennifer) Sesma; David (Francie) Head, Monticello, and their children, Zach (Amy) Akin, Breanna (Gary) Mathis; Mary (John) Brayton, Port Orford, OR., and their son, Benjamin Brayton; 11 great-grandchildren; a sister, Ellen (James) Malcomson, Barrington, NH.; 2 sisters-in-law, Barbara Olinger, Ankeny and Nancy (Ray) Scharf, Fort Dodge.   She was preceded in death by her parents,  her husband Robert, and her brother, William Warren.


Phyllis Maude Warren was born April 26, 1928 in Philadelphia, PA.   She was the daughter of William J. and Emma Riday Warren.  Phyllis graduated from Ridley Park High School in Philadelphia in 1946 and graduated from Simpson College in Indianola.   Phyllis married Robert Head on June 14, 1950 at Siloam Methodist Church, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She started teaching 3 and 4th Grade in Shelby County, Iowa and later at Woodbine.  She taught in the Onawa schools 7 years and in Newton for 28 years, retiring in 1985.  In 1987 Phyllis and Bob became snowbirds, living between St. Petersburg, FL, and Cedar Falls.  They moved to Monticello in 2000.   Following Bob's death on March 18, 2002, Phyllis continued to snowbird until 2016.


Phyllis was a member of the United Church of Monticello and Aldersgate United Methodist Church, in St. Petersburg.   She also belonged to the church choir and groups, Monticello Golf Club, P.E.O., Womens Club of Five Towns  and Angel Stitches, a sewing group in St. Petersburg.


Phyllis loved to play golf, won numerous Best in Show ribbons for her pies at the Jones County Fair and was famous for her cookies.
