Richard Nickels, 89, of Anamosa, died Monday, January 15, 2024 at Monticello Nursing and Rehabilitation.
Richard Arthur Nickels was born August 10, 1934 in Anamosa, the son of Richard Frank and Mary (Dayhoff) Nickels. He attended Anamosa Schools and later earned his Bachelors' degree from the University of Iowa. He served his country in Airborne Division of the United States Army and was honorably discharged in 1960. On February 11, 1961 he married Irene Leona Miller in Sabula, IA. The couple made their home in Anamosa. Richard was employed as an accountant at the Maquoketa Valley REC and retired after 37 years of service.
He was a former member of the Lions Club in Anamosa and enjoyed hunting, (ice) fishing, gazing at the stars through his telescope and spending time with family. He was a piano player and would play classical music, but he loved Dixieland jazz, attending the Bix Beiderbecke Festival in Davenport as often as he could.
Remembering him are his wife of nearly 63 years Irene, his children Zach (Kim), Monticello, Alan, Anamosa, Angela (Oyvind) Holtan, North Port, FL, and Amy Walters, Anamosa, eight grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, a sister-in-law Lucille Swanson, Frankfurt, KS, a brother-in-law Clifford Payne, Monticello, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a sister and her husband Mary Anne and Harlan Techau, sisters-in-law and their husbands Anna Mae and John Tiemann and Janet and Thomas McAleer, a brother-in-law and his wife Leonard and Juanita Miller, and a sister-in-law Gladys Payne.
Mr. Nickels' family will receive friends from 2 to 5 pm Thursday, January 25, 2024 at the Goettsch Funeral Home, Anamosa. Military Honors will be accorded by the United States Army and the Anamosa Veterans Honor Guard at approximately 4:30 pm.
