Richard Arthur Nickels was born August 10, 1934 in Anamosa, the son of Richard Frank and Mary (Dayhoff) Nickels. He attended Anamosa Schools and later earned his Bachelors' degree from the University of Iowa. He served his country in Airborne Division of the United States Army and was honorably discharged in 1960. On February 11, 1961 he married Irene Leona Miller in Sabula, IA. He was a piano player and would play classical music, but he loved Dixieland jazz, attending the Bix Beiderbecke Festival in Davenport as often as he could.
