Rodney Darin Schlee was born on November 30, 1965, at Mercy Hospital, in Oelwein, Iowa to Arthur and Una (Nading) Schlee. He grew up in Randalia and graduated from West Central High School in Maynard, Iowa, with the class of 1984. After early employment with Lance Foods in Cedar Rapids he began work at the Anamosa State Penitentiary as a Corrections Officer in 1991. Later he applied and began work in Prison Industries as a Shop Supervisor, finishing out his career for the last few years as a Corrections Officer, retiring in 2020 with 30 years in total.
In his youth Rodney enjoyed time spent at Clear Lake boating, waterskiing and gathering with family. This love continued throughout his life. Some of his happiest memories were of time spent with family at the Lake. Particularly, celebrating the Fourth of July watching the fireworks on the Lake with a corn dog and lemonade from the carnival in hand.
He was a motorcycle enthusiast and enjoyed manning the grill in search of the perfect sear. He attended the Apostolic Assembly where he met his wife Lori, who he married on October 18, 2003. They enjoyed family vacations together. He took pride in caring for his lawn and was a diehard Oakland Raiders fan. He lived and loved life to the fullest.
