Scott was born on February 24th, 1953, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa to Max and Jeanne Werling of Tipton. Scott grew up in Tipton and graduated from Tipton High School in 1971. He studied liberal arts and broadcasting at Kirkwood Community College and UNI, earning his Associate's degree. He married Cindy Shover on September 16th, 1978. Cindy's family welcomed Scott with open arms. Scott always felt honored and at home with the Shover family. With the help of their families, they built their permanent home from the ground up near Stone City, Iowa where they raised their 3 children. Scott was very involved in the community. He was elected to the Anamosa School Board in 1997. As a member of the school board, he was able to participate in high school commencement ceremonies. He was able to hand all three of his children their high school diplomas on their graduation days.
Scott worked as a disc jockey for several radio stations throughout his career. He worked for KWWL, KFMW, KXEL, KLWW, KOEL and KMCH. He also recorded daily weather announcements for various cities throughout the country. He started working for the Iowa Department of Public Safety as a dispatcher in January 1977. After more than 32 years, he retired from state radio in June of 2009. His work as a dispatcher earned him the opportunity to travel to Salt Lake City Utah in 2002 to assist with emergency dispatch at the Winter Olympic games.
Scott was the public address announcer for many schools and sports clubs in the area including Mount Mercy University, Cornell College, University of Northern Iowa, Upper Iowa University, Kirkwood Community College, Washington High School and Kennedy High School. He served as the public address announcer for Anamosa High school from 1996 to 2017 earning him a service recognition award from the school. He always looked forward to game days where he would use his DJ skills combined with his commanding voice to excite the crowd and players by creating an unique experience each time you heard him. Scott provided public address for the yearly Anamosa Hill Climb from 2003-2016. Scott also showed off his talents with The Quad City River Bandits as the public address announcer from 2009 to 2017. In 2011 Scott was chosen to travel to St. Louis with the River Bandits to announce their Midwest League Championship game at Busch Stadium, the home of the St. Louis Cardinals. He was very proud to have had an opportunity to announce at a major league baseball stadium. He also did DJ work in his spare time providing entertainment at many dances and wedding receptions.
Scott was an Iowa Hawkeye fan through and through. You could always find him cheering on the football, wrestling or basketball teams. He loved watching any sporting event including NASCAR. He loved spending time with his family playing games, watching movies or just 'shooting the breeze'. He even loved the family dog, a pug named Bandit. He was an active member of the Jones County Amateur Radio Club. His call sign was N0XZY. He enjoyed studying genealogy of the Werling and Shover families. He was fascinated with learning the history of both families.
Scott was very involved with his family and when asked, he said the happiest days of his life were when he got married, the birth of his 3 children, and the birth of his 3 grandchildren. He was extremely proud of his children and his grandchildren. He enjoyed every family vacation he was on and relished the time he was able to spend with his family. Scott also enjoyed coaching Little League and Babe Ruth baseball while his children participated in it.
He is survived by his wife Cindy Werling of Anamosa, his children Eric Werling of West Liberty, Todd (Heidi) Werling of Anamosa, Carrie (Josh) VanArman of Anamosa, his grandchildren, Peyton, Teagan and Everett, sister Sarah (Terry) Cochran of Fairfield, brother Stuart Werling of Tipton and multiple nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Max and Jeanne Werling.
Scott's family would like to extend their sincerest thanks to Dr. Mary Ann Nelson and the staff of St. Croix Hospice.
Memorials to the family can be sent to Goettsch Funeral Home, 306 E. First Street, Anamosa, IA 52205. They plan to make a donation to the Anamosa High School for public address equipment.
