Tom Shannon 80, of Monticello formerly of Oxford Junction died Monday, July 17, 2023, at the Monticello Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 Saturday morning, July 22, 2023, at the Goettsch Funeral Home, Monticello with interment in the Wayne Zion Cemetery at a later date. Friends may call from 9 until 10:45 at the Goettsch Funeral Home. Military Honors will be accorded by the United States Marine Corps and the Oxford Junction Legion. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Oxford Junction Legion. Those left to honor his memory are his wife, Marigene, 2 sons, Jeffrey (Lisa) and Douglas (Crystal) 6 grandchildren, Amanda, Garrett, Keanan, Kyler, Kailey, and Kaiden and a great-grandchild Finleigh, his siblings, Connie (Al) Lipka, Norma Jean (Gene) Gibson, Wayne (Gene) Shannon and a brother-in-law, Paul Behrends. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son Daniel, and siblings, Lorraine, Dorothy, Alice, Donna, Donald and brother-in-law Robert Wehling.
Thomas Jay Shannon was born on January 11, 1943, in Anamosa, Iowa. He was the son of John and Opal Thomas, Shannon. Tom completed his education at Oxford Junction High School. Tom went on to serve in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. He returned home and married Marigene Wehling on June 27, 1965, at the Wayne Zion Lutheran Church in rural, Monticello. The couple farmed near Wyoming and Tom also worked at the Iowa Men's Reformatory. Tom operated TNT Bulldozing for several years before he and Marigene, started trucking over the road for 10 years from 1988 until 1998. Tom then went to work at Crop Production in Wyoming and Farm Service in Onslow. He started trucking again locally in 2009. The couple moved to Scotch Grove for several years and later moved to Monticello in 2018.
