Virgil Behrends, 87, passed away Monday morning, September 9, 2024, at the Anamosa Care Center.
Funeral services will be held, 10:30 Monday morning, September 16th, 2024, at Wayne Zion Lutheran Church, rural Monticello with interment at Wayne Zion Cemetery. Pastor Holly Knouse will officiate the services. Visitation will be held from 2pm until 5pm Sunday September 15th at Goettsch Funeral Home, Anamosa. Surviving are 4 sons, Scott (Deb), Todd (Margery), Brett (Stephanie) and Matt (Sonya), 7 grandchildren, Claire (Jon Marks), Quinn (Margaret), Jennifer (Brandon Groves), Danielle, Kaleb, Hannah (Thomas Postel) and Jake, 3 great-grandchildren, Jadis, Elsie and Mabel, a brother-in-law, James (Kathy) Vacek.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Joyce in 1992 and his sister Doreen Scholbrock.
Virgil Lee Behrends was born September 30, 1936, at John McDonald Hospital in Monticello, the son of Louis and Hannah (Hayen) Behrends. Virgil attended Wayne Township School #6. He graduated from the Monticello Community School District with the class of 1955. Virgil served 2 years in the United States Army. He returned home to help his parents farm. He also worked as a farm hand for George Tobiason.
Virgil married Joyce Vacek on September 2, 1960, at the United Methodist Church in Oxford Junction. The couple farmed in Wayne Township and purchased what would be called the "Home" farm in 1962. He was a life-long member of Wayne Zion Lutheran Church.
Virgil enjoyed watching and attending Hawkeye & Cyclone basketball and football, hunting, fishing and going to the casino. He most of all enjoyed talking to people, hearing their story, and walking away with a new friend.
