Virgil Hunt, age 93, passed away on Monday, June 7, 2021, at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa following a sudden illness.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 Friday morning, June 11, 2021, at the United Church of Monticello. Visitation will be held Thursday, June 10, from 4:00 until 7:00 at the Goettsch Funeral Home, Monticello.
The church requests that masks be worn for the service . Memorials may be made to the United Church of Monticello.
Virgil D. Hunt was born May 5, 1928, in Lakewood, New Mexico. He was the son of Joey and Maudie O'Vela (Holman) Hunt. Virgil graduated from Guthrie Center, Iowa high school in 1946. He continued his education at Iowa State Teacher's College (UNI) graduating in 1948 and started teaching at Colesburg, Iowa.
Virgil married Phyllis Bean on May 28, 1950, in Yale, Iowa. The couple taught in Dunlap, Iowa for 2 years. Virgil took a position managing a shoe store in Sigourney, and in 1954 the couple moved to Monticello, where he managed and later purchased Stuhler's Shoe Store. In 1985 they closed the shoe store and began a second career with Paul Brooker Sales International. For 17 years they provided sales assistance to small businesses all over the United States.
Virgil was a member of the United Church of Monticello, serving as Financial Secretary for many years. He served on the Monticello Community School Board and continued serving as the Secretary to the Board for 28 years. In 2014 he was honored by the Monticello School Foundation for over 60 years of commitment to education. He volunteered at Camp Courageous, served on the Monticello Library Board, and was a member of the Monticello Rotary Club and Chamber of Commerce. Virgil was a 50-year member of the Burns Masonic Lodge.
He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Phyllis, 2 children, Deborah (Gordon) Goettsch, Manchester, Iowa, Randall (Danette) Hunt, Clinton, Iowa, 5 grandchildren, Caryn (Robert Nelsen) Goettsch, Spencer (Heidi) Goettsch, Nathan (Jenny) Goettsch, Brandon (Scott) Hunt, Justin (Shannon) Hunt, 11 great grandchildren, and his sister, Colina Abbott. He was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Vanessa Hunt, and 4 brothers, Randall, Clyde, William, and Gordon.
Virgil was loved by many for his warmth, kindness to others, quick wit, and devotion to family and friends. He will be dearly missed by the many whose lives he touched.
